Recent Market Developments for Steel Shot Raw Materials
This market update looks at the raw materials behind steel shot production — mainly scrap steel and pig iron — together with energy costs and downstream demand.

Scrap Steel: Weak Prices with Fluctuations
Scrap steel is the primary raw material for steel shot, especially cast steel shot and conditioned or ground steel shot. The market has recently been weak and fluctuating:
- Supply: Steel mills are receiving adequate shipments, and some scrap processing yards are actively moving inventory, which has built up market stocks.
- Demand: Electric arc furnace (EAF) mills are under margin pressure, so some have cut output or run staggered schedules, dampening scrap demand. Integrated blast-furnace mills show only moderate interest in using scrap.
- Prices: Heavy scrap prices have eased slightly in many regions, with clear regional variation; some mills in East and North China have cut purchase prices by 20–50 RMB per ton.
Pig Iron: Cost Support vs Weak Demand
- Foundry pig iron: Cost support from fluctuating coke and iron ore prices remains, but downstream foundries have insufficient orders and buy mainly for immediate needs, keeping prices stable but weak.
- Steelmaking pig iron: Prices track the wider steel market; trading stays modest and some producers face inventory pressure.
Energy and Auxiliary Materials
- Electricity: Some regions have entered the dry season or adjusted peak-valley pricing, raising power costs for EAF steelmaking and the heat treatment used in steel shot production.
- Coke: Prices have stabilized after earlier rises, reducing cost support for pig iron production.
- Alloy additives: Ferrosilicon and ferromanganese prices remain stable, with limited impact on the cost of adjusting steel shot chemistry.
Downstream Demand
- Shot blasting and cleaning: Demand from shipbuilding, steel structures and automotive components stays steady, with limited growth.
- Wear-resistant parts: Mining and cement activity is moderate; demand for high-end wear-resistant products such as high-chromium grinding balls stays decent, while the standard steel shot market is highly competitive.
- Exports: Some steel shot makers report more overseas inquiries, but ocean freight and exchange rate swings are pressuring margins.
Market Outlook
In the short term, steel shot raw materials are likely to keep fluctuating in a narrow range. Scrap prices face downward pressure from steel mill margins, limiting any gains, while pig iron is caught between cost support and weak demand. If infrastructure and shipbuilding demand recovers in the fourth quarter, it could give the steel shot market some support — but the overall supply-over-demand situation is unlikely to change fundamentally.
